To be honest it’s more amazing that beauty pageants somehow manage to go off without a hitch.

There’s heels, hairspray and some pretty antiquated views of what’s important for women. It’s a nightmare and 2016 has been a particularly bad year for pageants going wrong.

MISS ANAMBRA SEX LEAK SCANDAL

Since the story of the sex video involving former Miss Anambra, Chidinma Okeke, broke a few weeks ago, several groups and individuals have come forward with different versions of what transpired between the embattled 20-year-old beauty queen and the organizers of the pageant.

The former beauty queen was seen in a shocking x-rated video with a lesbian partner. Surprisingly, the video was released on October 11, 2016, a few days before the expiration of her tenure originally billed for October 28, 2016.

WRONG MISS UNIVERSE

I remember yelling across the newsroom as this went down. Miss Universe host Steve Harvey named Miss Columbia as the winner, but quickly realized he’d misspoken.

Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the real winner, and Columbia’s Ariadna Gutierrez was the first runner-up. Yikes.

You can imagine how awkward the crown-swap was. Harvey apologized both in the moment and later on Twitter, sadly the damage was done.

Some may say this tragic miscarriage of justice took place in late December 2015, but we were talking about it well into this year.

MISS TEEN USA’S RACE PROBLEM

This one went from 0 – 100. I came across the story when Chrissy Teigen (model, host of Lip Sync Battle, married to John Legend) tweeted a picture of the five finalists, who were all just about identical.

“Wow how can we choose from such a diverse bunch,” Teigen said, and I snorted.

Those laughs were short term, though. Within days, old tweets from winner Karlie Hay emerged in which she used the n-word.

The 18-year-old Texan apologized, and said she was influenced by her friends and the music she listened to.

DONALD TRUMP EXISTS

It’s been 20 years since Trump purchased the Miss Universe organisation. That same year, Alicia Machado of Venezuela won the crown, and Trump started insulting her appearance.

He called her Miss Piggy, he called her Miss Housekeeping, and he made her work out in front of reporters. Charming.

Machado came forward to speak about her experience and support Hillary Clinton in September.

That wasn’t the end of Trump’s beauty pageant horrors though. In October, comments he made in 2005 about walking in on contestants changing reemerged.

“I’ll go backstage before a show and everyone’s getting dressed and ready and everything else,” he told Howard Stern. “And you know, no men are anywhere. And I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant. And therefore I’m inspecting it.”

Yeah no, that’s not funny or remotely acceptable.

MISS ICELAND TOLD SHE HAS ‘TOO MUCH FAT’

Well, this is depressing. In October Miss Iceland, Arna Yr Jonsdottir, pulled out of an international beauty pageant after judges told her she would have to lose some weight to make the final.

The 20-year-old had already traveled to Las Vegas for Miss Grand International when she was told to “eat less and then you would like me more.”

Those comments were made just four days before she was due to compete, Yr Jonsdottir said in an Instagram post.

She also said the pageant tried to withhold her passport.

MISS FLORIDA SUES AFTER LOSING CROWN

File this under “God, pageants are weird.” Genesis Davila lost her Miss Florida title in August when organizers alleged she’d used professional hair and makeup artists.

That’s against pageant rules, so they booted her.

Davila maintains she did her own makeup for the contest itself, and is taking legal action.

Not so much about inner beauty.

MISS PUERTO RICO DE-THRONED

In March, Puerto Rico’s Miss Universe contestant Kristhielee Caride was stripped of her title for having an “attitude problem.”

Organizers took issue with her comments in a local interview, where she said she didn’t always love having a camera in her face.

Seems pretty reasonable from over here. Caride’s apologies fell on deaf ears though.

Organizers rejected her suggestion that even beauty queens can have a bad day.

“I allowed my feelings to get in the way of my work,” she wrote on Facebook. In September, Caride sued, and her case was dismissed.

Caride was replaced by Brenda Jimenez.
