BUCHI EMECHETA: A STRONG AFRICAN WOMAN

Buchi Emecheta was an amazing African writer who lived in the United Kingdom till she passed away in 2017. She was the first successful African woman novelist in Britain since after 1948.

Buchi Emecheta’s life is a story in itself. Let us say that her books reflect the story of her life. From SLAVE GIRL to THE BRIDE PRICE to THE JOYS OF MOTHERHOOD to SECOND HAND CITIZEN to mention a few. She authored over twenty books including an autobiography. Her books show the society that has no regards for women, often treating them as inconsequential. They show their struggles and how they cope with them.

She lost her father who was a railway worker when she was only nine years old. At age sixteen, she lost her mother and was soon married off to a young man to whom she was bethrothed since she was eleven years old. He went to the UK for further studies with her in tow.
