And so recently, the first woman of African descent to become an elected senator in the whole world, the Nigerian Franca Afegbua, was laid to rest. She was eighty-one years old.
The woman was elected into political office in Nigeria, in 1983. She was forty-one years old at the time. Unfortunately, the military junta of Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, aborted that republic three months after she was sworn in as senator.
How did she win the seat? Sheer charm and popularity. She was an international, award winning beautician whose clientele were the bourgeoisie; high earned women and wives of high earned men. She flew high the flag of her little tribe and got their approval to represent them in the government when elections came in 1983.
She made it count in that short spell. Her name as a pacesetter and the visible role she played in the Senate, are unforgettable.
