Reactions to Chidinma’s controversy, began yesterday. Two of the reactions were publicized. The declarations are in support of justice and fairness. One of the reactions comes from far away Mexico and a second is from Nigeria in Africa.
The first one is from Puebla International Literature Festival slated for the 4th-6th of October 2024. South Africa was their “Country in Focus” and some South Africans were guests. But after the xenophobic attacks and cyber bullying of a South African pageant contestant, these invites were revoked. And the focus country of the festival reviewed. This is PILF’s maiden edition.
To start with, a country in focus at the literature festival highlights the country’s art, culture and literature. Not only that, participants at the festival get to prioritize everything literature from the focus country.
Also, the guests are renowned authors, aspiring writers, literary enthusiasts and cultural analysts from Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa. Therefore, PILF states sticking with South Africa as it’s country in focus is against the justice and fairness they stand for.
Furthermore, PILF emphasizes they do not deny South Africa’s rich cultural heritage or the contributions of their poets, writers and artists. But PILF needs to make it clear that cultural cannot be separated from ethical responsibilities. However, they will continue supporting and providing platforms for South African writers and thinkers working towards a positive change.
Another reaction to Chidinma’s controversy is from her father’s country, Nigeria. The Nigerian Miss Universe organization, invites Chidinma to be one of their Miss Universe contestants in October 2024.
In counter reaction to these steps, South Africans say they do not care.
