At the end of the parolympics outing on Sunday 8th September, the Nigerian ladies proved themselves. Out of the seven medals won by their country Nigeria, six of them were won by these Nigerian Olympic amazons. Two of these ladies broke world records and wrote their names in world history books. We shall celebrate them in no particular order.
Our first celebrant is Folashade Oluwafemiayo, a gold medalist and world record holder. She broke the record she set before in powerlifting. If you have ever been on a bench press, you would truly appreciate that powerlifting which she did so casually.
The next celebrant is the youngest of them all, Miriam Eniola Bolaji. She is the first African ever to win a medal in badminton and has been working towards this historic day for over five years. The beautiful and enthusiastic player hopes to win a gold medal next time.
Yet, another one of Nigerian Olympic amazons who broke the weight lifting record is Onyiyechi Mark. This twenty-three year old lady made it a point to excel at this opportunity. And she did not just win a gold medal, her name is in world history forever.
Still, a fourth champion is Flora Ugunwa who won a silver medal for javelin throw. Besides, she is a seasoned, serial gold medal winner at the parolympics. To consistently be at the top of the game is plenty of hard work.
Another one of the Nigerian Olympic amazons is Esther Nworgu who also won a silver medal at weight lifting. However, last parolympics, she won a gold medal. She missed it this time because she had an injury. All the same, we are really proud of her.
Finally but certainly not the least, is Bose Omolayo who also won a silver medal in powerlifting at the parolympics. Also a serial champion, Bose is evidence that any physical challenge is not an excuse to give up.
Thus, these women are a challenge and inspiration to all of us. We who give up at the slightest obstacle we face.
What do you think? What excuses can we come up with after the strength of mind displayed by these ladies? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
