Anna Murray Douglass was the wife of the famous American abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, who invested and facilitated his freedom from slavery in 1838. She made the disguise for his escape, got him fare, contributed to his education and threw her weight behind his fight for the abolition.
Anna Murray Douglass took care of the home front while Frederick travelled all over America helping slaves escape and fighting for their freedom.
Anna Murray was born free. She worked as a housekeeper and laundry woman when she met enslaved Frederick Bailey at the docks. He proposed to her but she could not marry a slave. The headquarters of The Underground Railroad was in her home.
She was so dedicated that she was also a member of Boston Female Anti-slavery Society. How much do you know of The Underground Railroad group? Please share in the comments section below.
