SPANISH QUEEN-IN-WAITING LEONOR PRINCESS ASTURIAS OR..?

Leonor de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Ortiz was born on 31 October 2005.

She is the heir to the throne of Spain as the first child of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

Leonor was first educated at Escuela Infantil Guardia Real, which is the daycare for the children of the Spanish Royal Guard. She resumed primary school on 15th September 2008.

Her nursery education was at the Santa María de los Rosales School in Aravaca, just outside Madrid.

Her younger sister, Sofía attended the same school. Leonor speaks Spanish and English . She learnt English from her British nanny and her grandmother, Queen Sofía. She has also studied Mandarin and Arabic.

Leonor made her first official visit to the San Javier Air Force base in Murcia when she was ten and on 18 June 2014, her dad King Juan Carlos signed the instrument of abdication.

The next day at midnight (18–19 June 2014) Leonor’s father ascended the throne becoming King Felipe VI.

Leonor became his presumed heir and Princess of Asturias.

According to the Spanish constitution of 1975, the succession to the Spanish throne is under a system of male-preferred heir. This means that Leonor, as the elder of Felipe’s two daughters, is first in line to inherit the throne for now.

Under the current law, however, if her father has a legitimate son while still being king, Leonor would be displaced in the line of succession and again become an Infanta of Spain

Discussions to change this succession law to absolute primogeniture, allowing for the inheritance of the eldest child, regardless of sex was still on when her younger sister Sofía, was born.

Thus stopping these plans. Despite a change from male-preference to absolute primogeniture for Spanish titles of nobility in 2009, till now 2022, no legislation has been passed affecting the succession to the throne.
