SOLITUDE OF GUADELOUPE: SHE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR FREEDOM

A young maiden whose African name is unknown, was stolen from the shores of Africa and stuffed into a slave ship. She was executed for being part of a freedom fight.

The slave masters named her, Solitude. She was one of the irresistible African young women on the ship who a sailor assaulted and defiled. Unfortunately, she became pregnant for her assailant. After she and other slaves arrived the Caribbeans, there were disgruntled whispers among them. The freed ones were about to be re-enslaved.

The hunger for freedom led to her membership in the revolutionary army of Louis Delgres.

Louis Delgres was a French military officer, a free-born. Till Napoleon decided that they should be re-enslaved. Pregnant Solitude joined over a thousand other Africans to resist Napoleon’s move to enslave them again.

Sadly, the expectant mother was captured and imprisoned by the French forces. Less than twenty-four hours after she birthed her baby, Solitude was executed.

Considering the outfit on her statue and her fighting spirit, she sounds like an Amazon of Dahomey. When an African woman ties her wrapper or headgear or sweater on her waist, know that you are in big trouble. If you agree, say ‘yes’, in the comments section below.
