ALTHEA GIBSON: FIRST AFRICAN FEMALE TO WIN THE WIMBLEDON TITLE & FIRST AFRICAN FEMALE GOLFER

In the fifties, lovely Althea Gibson ruled the tennis world. In 1957 she became the first African woman to win the Wimbledon, the US OPEN and the French championship in 1956.

This legend of a woman won her first tennis title in 1942! She was only fifteen! She was born in 1927. That was the New York Police Athletic League Championship. She was sponsored by the ATA -an organization set up to promote and support African athletes.

She won ten championships from 1947-1956. After 1960, she became a golfer. She also became the first black woman to partake in the golfing competition. She retired in 1971 and was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame.

Billie Jean King, Angela Buxton and others supported her till she passed away in 2003.

Again, women supporting women. Do you know that pageants contribute to the continuation of this support sisterhood? Text yes or no in the comments section below.
