DOROTHY KUYA OF LIVERPOOL

Dorothy kuya of Liverpool was an African human rights activist in Britain. Her mother was from Liverpool and her adopted father, whose name she bears, was a Nigerian. She is described as Liverpool’s greatest fighter against racism and inequality.

 She was co-founder of Teachers Against Racism. She was also general secretary of a women’s rights organization called National Assembly of Women.

She was in the lead to establish the Liverpool International Slavery Museum in 1952. Dorothy grew up in Liverpool 8. It was a community of very poor black people who suffered acute racial discrimination.

The first Black Studies classes began because of her insistence and

Slavery Remembrance day was first held in 1999. She made it happen. It has been celebrated in Liverpool every August since then.
