FEMALE AFRICAN PRESIDENTS: Tanzania (1)

This series is a celebration of African women, who in recent times, are gradually coming into their own and leading their countries to success. Their countries too are surely growing out of their patriarchal mindset which before now has given little room for female leadership.

Further more, we boldly say that these leaders have been inspired by ancient , powerful women like the Dahomey amazons, known as The Agojie, Queen Amina of Zaria, Queen Moremi of Ife, Queen Nzinga of Ndongo, Queen Idia of Benin, Empress Zaudifu of Ethiopia, to mention a few.

So, our first celebrant in this series of modern, female African leaders is Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania. Coincidentally, today 19th of March is also her fourth year as the first female president of Tanzania. Suluhu was sworn into office after the sudden passing of her predecessor Mr. Magufuli.

President Samia joined politics as long ago as year 2000(Y2K) and made history as the first female president and first female vice-president of Tanzania. Shortly after she took over as president, her first task was lifting the ban placed on four newspapers by the late president.

This amazing woman has changed the economic situation of Tanzania for the better since coming into power. Approving  policies that are making Tanzania so conducive for business that for the first time, a Tanzania man made the Forbes cover as one of Africa’s richest men.

Do you agree that the countries that vested confidence in these women should also be applauded? You can share your thoughts in the comments section below.
