FEMALE AFRICAN PRESIDENTS: Ethiopia

The celebration of female presidents in Africa continues with Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia. She is the first female president of Ethiopia. Sahle became president in 2018 after selection by PM Abiy and approval by the Federal Parliamentary Assembly of Ethiopia. 2024 will be her sixth year and the end of her first term as president.

Ms Zewde can be described as a career diplomat. She has served as the second ever female, Ethiopian ambassador back in the 80s. From then 2018, she has served her country in Senegal, Cape Verde, Mali, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Djibouti, France and Gambia.

Before her post as DG in Ethiopia, the United Nations made Sahle-Work their Director -General in Nairobi, Kenya. Becoming the president of her country, is quite appropriate because of her experience in different parts of world.

Furthermore, she worked with the United Nations as a permanent representative and in the African Union also as a permanent representative. As a seasoned diplomat, it is only natural for her country made her the Director General of the ministry of foreign affairs.
