AFRICAN FEMALE LEADERS: Gabon (4)

Celebrating African women who reached the peak of power in their countries, is an inspiration for future generations.

From Gabon, comes Rose Francine Rogombé who was acting president of Gabon for two months- June 2009 to October 2009. She also made history as the first female president and head of state of Gabon. Before her presidency, she was the senate president. A position Rose returned to, after a new president was elected.

To start with , Ms. Rogombé was a France trained lawyer. When she returned to Gabon in the sixties, she joined the government and worked as a magistrate for several years. Then in the 1980s she got into politics and became the secretary of state, whose primary assignment was advancing women’s rights. An issue crucial not only in Gabon but in practically every African country.

When there was a transitory period in politics, she returned to her calling as a lawyer. Rose threw herself into her job and again got to the height of the profession. The vice-president of the Special Criminal Court. Is this woman a goal getter or what?

Finally, she went back into politics and got into the senate. As expected, she became Senate President. A confirmation that she was doing something different to get to the pinnacle of every career path she trod. The best was round the corner.

That best was not just becoming president, but her ability to lead the country to select another president after the sudden passing of her predecessor. If you know Africa, that smooth handover to a new president, in Gabon deserves a standing ovation.

We give her that ovation here, even if it is posthumous. Hip! Hip! Hip! Hurrah!

You can drop a star in the comments section below for her. She was a shining star.
