HILDA BYNOE: 1ST FEMALE GOVERNOR OF GRENADA & CW

As early as 1968, Dame Dr. Hilda Louisa Bynoe, became the first woman a pointed the governor not only in Grenada, but in all of the British commonwealth nations. She was forty-seven years old and ruled for six years.

Today we celebrate this beautiful woman of many parts who was able to put many progressive programmes in place before resigning in 1974. Hilda Louisa first trained and worked as a teacher for some years. Anxious to make an impact in healthcare, she attended London School of Medicine and became a doctor.

Hilda worked as a doctor for fifteen years before her appointment as governor.

Achievements-

Apart from being against racism and exploitation, Dr. Bynoe was so concerned about human behavior, that she became the first doctor in Grenada to insist on psychiatric evaluation of patients as part of the healing process. She also contributed to the development of the School of Arts and Sciences at St. George’s University, Grenada.

Finally, the woman of style proudly wore an Afro, until she passed away in 2013 at age 91. She flaunted her Africanness everywhere she went.
