1864 AND REBECCA LEE CRUMPLER

Dr. Lee Crumpler was the first ever African female medical doctor in the world. We do not celebrate this icon enough. Sorry to be so cliché.

Yes. She became a doctor at a time when it was practically forbidden for a person with dark skin colour to read medicine. In pool areas, they were forbidden from getting any formal education. In fact blacks were not admitted into medical school.

The emancipation of Africans all over America was formally announced in 1864. This amazon was born in 1831. She became a medical doctor in 1864! One can only imagine what determination and passion pushed this woman to attend medical school.

Yes it was in the northern part of the United States which was maybe a little easier on Africans. But it was hard for everyone of colour at the time. In fact, she was the only person of colour in her medical school. Can you beat that? Sexism and racism must have been her diet throughout the period.

Inspired by the aunt she lived with, Rebecca became a doctor. To further reflect her earnest desire for healthy patients, she wrote books to guide present and future generations in the medical field. These milestones were achieved when both activities were “not” for Africans. And in the midst of the enslavement and the civil war.

Rebecca Lee Crumpler was a rare talent. An inspiration for all time. How many people have heard about her? Do share in the comments section below.
